In a recent development, Alaskan Dream Cruises, a cruise line based in Sitka, has announced its closure, ceasing all operations and canceling future sailings. The company, which has been in operation since 2011, has been a prominent player in the Alaska tourism industry, offering overnight cruises that showcased the wonders of Alaska and its rich Native heritage to guests from around the world.
Alaskan Dream Cruises was a subsidiary of Allen Marine, a local maritime business with a five-decade history of providing wildlife and sightseeing tours in Southeast Alaska. Allen Marine's spokesperson, Zak Kirkpatrick, expressed pride in the company's Indigenous ownership and its transformation into a world-class cruise operator, winning national awards and featuring in international publications.
The overnight cruises, operated by Alaskan Dream Cruises, were a key attraction, offering a comprehensive Inside Passage experience with activities like hiking, kayaking, and paddle boarding. However, the decision to exit the overnight cruise business was strategic, according to Kirkpatrick, aimed at focusing the company's resources on its core strengths: day tour excursions, shipyard operations, and marine services.
Alaskan Dream Cruises employed a significant workforce, including 95 seasonal and 10 year-round workers in 2025. Allen Marine, on the other hand, had a larger employment footprint, with 305 seasonal and 100 year-round workers across its various services. With the closure, Allen Marine has indicated that it will not be hiring for the overnight boat cruise season.
The company is taking proactive steps to communicate directly with guests regarding reservations and refund processes. This closure marks a significant shift in the Alaska tourism industry, leaving a void in the overnight cruise market that will be challenging to fill.
