In a bold declaration that is sure to ignite discussions, actor Naveen Kaushik has expressed his perspective regarding the portrayal of Rehman Dakait in the film "Dhurandhar," directed by Aditya Dhar. Many viewers from Pakistan have voiced their concerns, suggesting that the film glorifies Akshaye Khanna's character, Rehman Dakait. This assertion has sparked considerable debate.
Akshaye Khanna's performance has been widely praised, as he brings an air of quiet menace to the screen. Every time he appears, the music swells, and the camera captures his commanding presence. The film centers on Ranveer Singh, who plays an Indian operative on a mission to infiltrate the gang led by Rehman Dakait in Pakistan. Despite Khanna's compelling portrayal, some audiences believe the film romanticizes his character.
However, Naveen Kaushik, who plays the role of Donga in the film, disagrees with this viewpoint. In an interview with Live Hindustan, he elaborated on why he believes the film does not glorify Dakait but rather presents a multifaceted character. He emphasized the importance of showcasing the complexities of Rehman Dakait’s personality. His character faces significant challenges, including the loss of his son, which adds depth to his portrayal. "To create a character like him, we must illustrate the environment he operates within," Naveen explained. "The protagonist, Hamza, is a spy who must navigate this dangerous world to accomplish his mission, and it’s vital to depict the hardships he faces, including the tragic elements surrounding Dakait's life. Without establishing these aspects, audiences may struggle to accept the character."
Naveen further noted, "We’ve moved past the era of the overly theatrical villains, reminiscent of Mogambo. That style belonged to a different time. Nowadays, audiences are more sophisticated, having been exposed to global cinema. It's crucial to portray characters like Rehman Dakait with complexity, capturing their shades of grey to make them believable and relatable."
"Dhurandhar" premiered in theaters on December 5, featuring a star-studded cast that includes R. Madhavan, Sanjay Dutt, and Arjun Rampal, alongside Sara Arjun and Rakesh Bedi in significant roles. Excitement is already building for the sequel, set for release on March 19, 2026.
