A major investigation has been launched by the Health and Safety Authority (HSA) following a tragic 'fatal accident' at the former Irish Glass Bottle site in Dublin. The incident, which occurred on a construction site in Ringsend, has sparked concern as emergency services and Gardaí were called to the scene on Friday afternoon. The site, once an industrial hub, is now being transformed into a residential development with thousands of homes. The construction group Sisk, hired to build the first phase, confirmed an incident had taken place and is currently investigating the circumstances. The HSA, in a statement, acknowledged the 'fatal incident' and stated that no further details are available at this time. The development, known as Pembroke Beach, is a joint venture between Johnny Ronan's Ronan Group Real Estate (RGRE), US private-equity firm Oaktree, and development company Lioncor. The project aims to create a vibrant residential community with up to 3,800 apartments and various amenities. However, this incident serves as a stark reminder of the risks associated with construction work. As of September 22nd, Ireland had already witnessed 32 fatal workplace injuries this year, with a significant number related to agriculture, forestry, and fishing. The construction sector has seen a 50% decline in workplace fatalities compared to 2023, but the overall number of deaths remains concerning. Between 2015 and 2024, a total of 92 fatalities occurred in Irish construction, highlighting the ongoing challenges in ensuring worker safety in this industry.
