Fixed Speed Cameras in York & North Yorkshire: Can they slash crash deaths? (2026)

Speeding: A Deadly Issue in North Yorkshire

In a bid to tackle the persistent problem of speeding and its devastating consequences, York and North Yorkshire are considering implementing fixed speed cameras. This move has sparked a range of reactions, from enthusiastic support to vocal opposition.

Community Speedwatch volunteers in Slingsby, a village near Malton, have been monitoring speeds on the B1257 and are strongly in favor of the proposed measure. Catherine Kinglake, a Speedwatch member, shared her concerns: "We consistently find drivers exceeding the speed limit, and it's a real worry for the safety of our community."

She emphasized the villagers' desire to prevent any fatalities, believing that fixed cameras would significantly reduce speeding and improve road safety. "People often get caught up in their own world and don't realize they're speeding, especially when transitioning from national speed limits to lower limits within the village."

John Breckon, another Speedwatch member, added: "Most drivers are considerate and will respond to gentle reminders. A simple sign asking them to slow down can make a difference."

However, not everyone shares this positive outlook. A trial of a fixed speed camera on the A64 in Sherburn was met with resistance, as the device was deliberately vandalized on the day it was scheduled to become operational. This incident highlights a divide in opinions within the community.

"There's a small but vocal group who believe they're above the law when it comes to road rules," explained Coles. "We understand that speed is a major factor in road fatalities, and we must explore all possible solutions to reduce these tragic incidents."

And this is where it gets controversial... Should we prioritize road safety over individual freedoms? Is the implementation of fixed speed cameras an effective measure, or will it lead to further resentment and non-compliance?
