The automotive world is buzzing with the unveiling of Audi's new powerhouse, the RS5. With a staggering 630bhp and a V6 engine, it's ready to challenge the BMW M3. But here's the twist: it's a plug-in hybrid! This unexpected combination raises eyebrows and sparks curiosity.
The RS5 offers around 50 miles of electric-only range, making it an intriguing choice for company car drivers seeking both performance and efficiency. Audi has equipped it with powerful brakes, featuring 420mm steel front discs and 400mm rears, and for those seeking the ultimate in stopping power, carbon-ceramic brakes are available as a £6000 option, shedding 30kg of unsprung weight.
But the real game-changer is Audi's approach to handling. They've tackled the notorious understeer issue with a new Dynamic Torque Control system. This innovative setup includes a torque vectoring rear differential, essentially a limited-slip differential with a 11bhp motor, capable of redistributing 1475lb ft of torque between the wheels in an instant. Combined with a locking center differential that can send 100% of the drive to the rear wheels and a dedicated 'RS Torque Rear' drift mode, Audi claims to have banished understeer.
"There is no understeer," boasts Audi's Michl. This bold statement invites drivers to experience the RS5's newfound agility, positioning it as a serious contender to the BMW M3 and Mercedes-AMG C63, both known for their rear-biased four-wheel-drive systems.
The RS5's design is equally striking, with a more aggressive stance compared to its predecessors. Sitting lower and wider, it commands attention on the road. Designer Wolf Seebers explains, "We wanted to differentiate it from the base model significantly. We explored motorsport-inspired designs but opted for a more restrained approach." Seebers' vision is a testament to the RS5's unique character.
