Liquor Sales at Community Colleges: A New Law Allows for On-Premise Consumption
Lansing, Michigan - In a significant development, Governor Gretchen Whitmer has signed a new law that will allow three Metro Detroit community colleges to sell liquor in specific areas of their campuses. This move has been praised for its potential to enhance students' real-world experience and provide a boost to the culinary arts programs.
The legislation enables Macomb Community College and Wayne County Community College to sell liquor in event spaces, eliminating the need for a daily pass. It also paves the way for a partnership between Schoolcraft College and Nino Salvaggio, aiming to create a full-service marketplace on campus, benefiting culinary students studying brewing and distillation.
State Representative Matt Koleszar, a sponsor of the bills, highlighted the college's reputation as the culinary capital of the region. He believes this new law will provide students with valuable hands-on experience as they prepare for their post-graduation careers.
The new law grants the Michigan Liquor Control Commission the authority to issue licenses for on-premise liquor sales at a designated restaurant on Schoolcraft College land, adjacent to a grocery store. This restaurant is intended for industrial, research, or commercial development. Additionally, the law permits the sale of beer, wine, or spirits from the grocery store for off-premise consumption.
State Representative Rylee Linting played a crucial role in sponsoring the Schoolcraft College bills. The legislation also extends its provisions to Macomb and Wayne community colleges, allowing liquor sales at the Expo Center Complex, John Lewis Student Community Center, and the Culinary Arts and Hospitality Center.
Previously, Macomb Community College faced the inconvenience of obtaining a daily pass for liquor sales at its event venues. However, Representative Joseph Aragona believes this change will streamline the process, making it easier for the college to serve alcohol during special functions.
The bills received widespread bipartisan support in both the Republican-led House and the Democratic-led Senate, indicating a strong consensus on the importance of this legislation.
Furthermore, the governor signed two additional bills on Tuesday, addressing various aspects of Michigan's liquor laws. These bills include provisions for college-branded alcohol packaging and advertising, as well as measures to combat bot-driven ticket price hikes at concerts and sporting events.
