The Isle of Man Steam Packet Company has exciting news for travelers: they are set to introduce a new, year-round ferry service from Larne Port, starting later this year.
This marks a significant change from the previous seasonal weekly route that operated from Belfast to the Isle of Man. The new service will operate three times a week, with sailings scheduled on Mondays and Fridays, making it much easier for visitors to plan long weekend trips.
Kicking off in April 2026, the first sailings from Larne will pave the way for a full timetable that begins in July. The company is committed to maintaining this route for at least two years, ensuring that there are three sailings each week throughout the year. This move not only enhances leisure travel but also accommodates business and freight transportation, providing more options for everyone.
In a conversation with Belfast Live during the Holiday World Show in Belfast, Brian Thomson, the Managing Director of the Isle of Man Steam Packet Company, expressed enthusiasm about the new schedule. He emphasized that it would greatly improve the connection between the Isle of Man and Ireland. "From July, we will be running three services a week from the Isle of Man to Larne, which obviously includes return trips. This brings people from Ireland to our beautiful island.
"Larne offers better connectivity for us. While Belfast is a busy port, Larne has the space we need and is close enough to Belfast, making it easy to connect both locations and the greater island of Ireland. This partnership with Larne Port is a fantastic opportunity for us to deliver an excellent service."
Thomson also noted the advantages for leisure travelers. "Previously, we only offered a seasonal service once a week, but now we’ll operate all year round, three times a week, including services on Fridays and Mondays for those looking to enjoy a long weekend.
The Isle of Man is rich in tourist attractions, offering unique experiences. While motorcycling is a highlight, many people from the island also enjoy exploring Ireland. Additionally, there’s a large Irish community on the Isle of Man who wish to visit family back home, making this service invaluable for maintaining those connections.
Regarding the onboard experience, Thomson mentioned, "We strive to provide as much comfort as possible during the short ferry ride. Our vessel, the Ben-my-Chree, has been with us for many years and is set to undergo a refurbishment, ensuring she will be in top condition for passengers by July."
He further highlighted the numerous attractions available on the Isle of Man, noting that it offers a variety of activities in a compact area. "In just one day, you can go mountain climbing and windsurfing, with outdoor pursuits like mountain biking and hiking easily accessible, all while still being close to urban areas.
Moreover, the company plans to maintain a seasonal service sailing twice a week to Dublin, reinforcing the connection between the Isle of Man and Ireland. Thomson remarked that this link is essential, as it allows travelers to easily journey between the two ports, offering flexibility for those who want to visit for just a day or two.
Passengers should expect a travel time of approximately four and a half hours, yet Thomson assures that there will be plenty to keep them entertained on board. "We offer fantastic dining options thanks to our executive chef, and we take pride in showcasing local produce and drinks from the Isle, including offerings from our many distilleries. I believe that passengers will appreciate the journey as much as they do their destination.
"An interesting trend we’ve noticed is the increasing demand for pet-friendly travel. It’s so popular that we joke about making our vessel fully compliant for pets, but we must consider allergies as well. This has become a key service area for us, especially among ferry travelers."
Jackson Minford, Mayor of Mid and East Antrim Borough Council, expressed his excitement about the new Larne service, stating, "We are thrilled to welcome this new route from the Isle of Man Steam Packet Company. It significantly enhances connectivity, tourism, and trade in our region.
"The launch of this route emphasizes Larne’s vital role in the Irish Sea network and showcases our borough as a great destination for both business and leisure, creating opportunities for local economic growth and strengthening ties with the Isle of Man.
"This service represents a significant investment that will attract visitors, which is crucial for our priorities. With stunning landscapes, vibrant events, and a rich heritage, Mid and East Antrim is an ideal place to invest, visit, and explore."
Laura Gilmour, General Manager of Larne Harbour, added her perspective, saying, "We are excited to welcome the Isle of Man Steam Packet Company’s new service to Larne. This route not only improves connectivity across the Irish Sea but also highlights Larne’s strategic position as a gateway for both leisure and freight travel. We believe this partnership will bring long-term benefits to passengers, businesses, and the broader region, and we look forward to working together to ensure the success of this service."
